Cancer is a menace that has continually claimed many lives in Kenya mainly due to lack of access to timely and quality cancer care services.
The hospitals are not arranged in any specific order. Spread the Love. Share with a friend.
The Karen Hospital’s has one of the best oncology departments in Kenya, offering surgical oncology, chemotherapy, and reconstructive surgery services.
Amputation for peripheral tumors
For many cancer patients, this is the only remedy. It involves the excision of the severely affected external organs mainly to stop the infection spread.
This is mostly for cancerous tumors that appear at the limbs. Oncologist would recommend for amputation as it increases the chances of healing.
Breast conservation surgery
Patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer at an early stage benefit from this procedure, followed by radiation therapy.
Specialists at the Karen Hospital use this method to assist women save their breasts from different kinds of malignancies.
Reconstruction services are also available for women who opt for mastectomy (complete excision of the breast).
Examination under Anesthesia to examine and stage cervical and vaginal cancer.
Hemi Thyroidectomy A safe and non-complicated method used to treat the tumors in the thyroid gland, and for cosmetic problems.
Modified radical mastectomy where the breast along with the skin, tissues, areola and nipple are removed but the chest muscles are spared. Breast restoration surgery can be done following this procedure.
Simple mastectomy where the complete breast is removed to avoid the chances of re-occurrence of breast cancer.
Ampath Cancer Research Center
The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) was officially established in 2001 as a partnership between Indiana University in North America and Moi University in Eldoret.
While their commitment to the HIV epidemic remains a top priority, they have also expanded into care that includes chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental health, maternal health, child health, and more.
Today, AMPATH is western Kenya’s first system of sustainable care and empowerment for an entire population, with 3,041 Cancer patients treated in 2018
AMPATH serves a population of more than 8 million people in Kenya at 800+ clinical sites from village health centers and dispensaries, county hospitals and the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The AMPATH Oncology Institute was formed in 2008, a time when there were no cancer treatment options available in western Kenya.
In 2016, the partnership opened the Chandria Cancer and Chronic Disease Centre at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya, which serves as a learning institute to train the next generation of Kenyan caregivers, and provides a home for robust research and care.
Cervical and Breast Cancer
Ampath conducts aggressive cervical and breast cancer screening in Western Kenya. Approximately 60,000 Kenyan women have benefited from their screening clinics over the past five years.
Ampath provides access to treatment as well as follow up care for patients with hematological conditions such as sickle cell disease, hemophilia, and multiple myeloma.
The facility has established three rural outreach clinics for hematology patients to be seen on a weekly basis, apart from the daily clinics at the AMPATH Center.
In partnership with the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center, Ampath also supports five county hospitals to conduct screenings, educate medical personnel, and cancer research.
Western Kenya (and many other parts of the country) had no access to paediatric cancer treatment before 2007.
Childhood cancers must be aggressively treated early and effectively in the first round to help kids survive.
In 2010, AMPATH began oncology training opportunities for doctors, students, nurses, and other health care providers to test, diagnose, and treat pediatric cancer.
Ampath has managed to dramatically reduce the diagnosis time for cancers like Acute leukemia from multiple weeks to a few days.

Just like the Aga Khan Hospital, this facility is also located in Parklands, Nairobi, along Shivachi Road.

For a period of close to 9 years, the Center has handled close to 20,000 cancer patients in Kenya.
Their chemotherapy and radiotherapy services are conducted using highly advanced technologies, hence cancer patients have access to quality health care.
A functional out-patient clinic is available for cancer patients who are not in need of admission, especially those seeking cancer screening and newly diagnosed patients. Still, the Center has adequate facilities for admissions.

Thyroid Cancer Treatment
Using the lucrative Radioactive Iodine technology, the Texas Cancer Center is able to administer treatment for throat disorders as well as thyroid cancer.

Intensity modulated radiation therapy
This is a new, advanced radiation technique employing recent innovations in imaging for accurate outcomes.
It is particularly suited for tumors near critical organs. It limits the radiation dose reaching the normal tissue and organs.
This makes it achieve relatively higher radiation dose to tumor tissue compared to conventional radiotherapy.
For instance, with the IMRT technique, the dose for treatment of prostate cancer can be increased without exposing the bladder and rectal organs to high doses of radiation.
The results are obvious: better tumor control, lesser side effects and improved quality of life.
IMRT is the proven technique in the treatment of head and neck cancers, prostate, cervical, endometrial cancers, as well as cancers located in the chest and abdominal area like esophagus, stomach, pancreas etc.

Aga Khan University Hospital
This hospital has its main facility in Parklands, along Limuru Road, Nairobi.

The hospital has one of the best radiology centers in the region. This makes them always receive patients on referral from several public and private hospitals in Kenya.
Being one of the most sophisticated radiology facilities in East and Central Africa, The Aga Khan University Hospital provides both routine and specialized radiology procedures.
The hospital uses high level picture archiving and communication systems that allow digital images to be viewed immediately after an examination. This significantly reduces the diagnosis time.
If you would are in need of any breast health information, or have any breast problems, Aga Khan Hospital has a Breast Centre offering such services.
Breast cancer screening is available for free. Confirmed breast cancer patients have a number of treatment options to choose from.
Breast conservation surgery is one of these options, which is treatment by removing only the infected breast tissue, without doing away with the breast. Radiation therapy is then done to the remaining healthy cells of the breast.
Of course women are worried about the cosmetic results of cancer treatment. However, with breast conservation, the treated and untreated breast are almost identical.
Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women in Kenya. At the Aga Khan Hospital, treatment of cervical cancer is mostly done using brachytherapy, a special type of radiotherapy.
How different is this from ordinary radiotherapy? In Brachytherapy, the radioactive rays are directed as close to the tumor as possible to deliver a very high dose in that small area.
This ensures that the organs and tissues close to the tumor are not damaged in the process of treatment.
The Aga Khan University Hospital offers chemo sessions to cancer patients, combining several drugs to damage the cancer cells.
Those that prefer radiation therapy will also find help here. The hospital has well trained and experienced oncologists and oncology clinics to assess patients seeking radiotherapy treatment.
Kijabe Mission Hospital
The hospital is well known for its specialised, free support services for cancer patients, probably tthe best in East frica.
