Being a personal assistant to a man of God can be a humbling experience. I mean, immersing yourself into the life of the spiritually rich and powerful is admirable.
However, it can also reveal the ugly side of humanity. As you will realize after reading this article, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns and first-class upgrades.
The Supreme ‘OverLord’
If you are the visitor in the house, Owuor has with time graduated to become “THE LORD”. Anyone addressing him must always ensure he does it right, in CAPS if written.
You will shortly realize that there is a decidedly dark side to dedicating most of your personal life to someone of “Prophet’ Owuor’s caliber. It’s crushing. It’s exhausting. It’s pandering.
Owuor is a man who wants to be everything and every one significant on matters faith. He is a god you must revere and bow down to.
He is an ‘angel’ whose needs you may never understand. To be duty-tied to someone of this cadre isn’t a ride in the park.
You are working as an assistant to a 53-year-old who demands he be honored with all manner of funny titles. Full-blown childlike tantrums and belittling rants are daily occurrences.
The office headquarters is a warehouse infested with documentaries.
Your family never gets to see you 3 times a year. Meanwhile, the ‘Overlord’ is building a $500,000 mansion, well designed to take care of his missions after you (the assistant) have been raptured.
He calls the shots and is the only authority on everything.
The Overlord has a large following, so anyone who ‘crosses’ him or calls him out on their horrible practices is put on public blast on 105.3Fm.
Joan is waiting.
This apparent downright evil and sinister behavior by ‘Prophet’ Owuor, along with the spineless, lily-livered pastors and ministry leaders who circle wagons around this man, have led us this hour.
Spilling the Beans
Of course, bosses everywhere have their quirks, but Owuor seems to be a particularly terrifying species.
While some former personal assistants would prefer to leave their traumatizing experience in the past, there are the ones who may feel scorned enough to write a juicy memoir.
I would personally fully rally behind these people speaking up. It’s a difficult truth. As Christians, we must not hide such dirty laundry.
Why not bring it out into the sunlight so that the world can see what we mean when we say we need the Christ-centered Gospel?
Admitting our propensity to sin in the presence of a watching world is part of testifying about the undeniable power of the cross.
Maybe then, seeing our humility, others might find this Jesus to be worth their time.
But inside Owuor’s camp, everyone lives in fear of speaking up. No one shares anything with anyone without permission.
‘Prophet’ Owuor’s Personal Assistants
To regular churchgoers like myself, being a personal assistant to such a ‘lofty’ man of God sounds extremely attractive.
I mean you are technically the person who’s constantly a mere heartbeat away from ‘God’s presence’!
But when you pull back the curtain, you find that being that close to the sun has its consequences.
The man Owuor has had 3 known personal assistants ever since he began preaching in Kenya, though he will always deny one of them.
You don’t need to burn any calories guessing why.
#1. Kevin Okwara
Mr. Okwara is an entrepreneur and the founding director of Alphax College in Eldoret. I understand that he is now also a politician in Western Kenya.
The man Okwara has been to several media houses at their invitation, sharing on his experience in the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness headed by Prophet Owuor.
Kass TV’s Levy Kones had a comprehensive interview with Mr. Okwara on January 23rd, 2015.
Kevin Okwara gives plain details on his experience in the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness headed by Prophet Owuor during the interview.
Plus the escapades of his time while serving as the Prophet’s aide.
Many people have come out disputing Mr. Okwara’s role as a personal assistant to Prophet Owuor. Well, I will tell you why this is not true.
Okwara says that he was doubling as one of the assistants to Prophet Owuor in ministry sometimes in 2006.
Which means he was not the only person assisting Owuor in ministry at the time.
Very possible, given that Owuor’s ministry had just started, and everyone wanted to at least take a position somewhere inside this newest move in town.
For me, it was a privilege to sit so close to a world-renown prophet. One who has been, not just to the US and UK but to heaven several times and one who speaks to God face to face. What a privilege for a simple Kenyan business man like me. The feeling was good and I can confess there was great joy in my heart.
What is worth noting is, if you get a chance to listen to multiple testimonies of past members of this cult, they are very consistent with what one Kevin Okwara gave several years ago.
In the written testimony, Mr. Okwara narrates that he had the privilege (sarcasm) of accompanying Owuor to several meetings in Eldoret, Kitale, Kakamega, Oyugis and many other towns.
Mr. Okwara testifies about many things surrounding his stay around ‘Prophet’ Owuor. But I would like to single out a few things that Okwara saw several years back.
Things that have continually become manifest in Owuor’s life and ministry.
#1. As early as 2006, Mr Okwara was able to bring out something that has stuck by Owuor’s left side to date. Owuor should never be questioned about anything, by anyone.
Mr. Okwara narrates that his brief experience with the prophet taught him to always say yes to anything he suggests and never question a thing.
#2. Prophet Owuor told Okwara and several other people close to him at the time that he is the ELIJAH the bible talks about in the book of Malachi 4:5… He also disclosed that he is one of the witnesses the bible talks about in Rev 11:3 ..
#3. Mr. Okwara expresses his worry with Owuor’s style of re-baptizing people who join his church, including pastors. The reason for doing this, he says, is because we were baptized by ‘Baal Pastors’ and that such baptism is not recognized in heaven.
#4. Mr. Okwara also recounts Owuor’s command that everyone must repent in sackcloth. He was present at the Kapsakwony Repentance Crusade where women were wailing in sackcloth. This was the last crusade he attended, having left the venue even before the meeting ended.
#5. On judgment pronunciations, Kevin Okwara noticed, early enough, Owuor’s appetite for cursing people with judgment. He tells of a Bishop’s wife from Kakamega who went into a fast for 40days because Owuor told her that he had shut the heavens over her life.
#6. When he finally disentangled himself from the Ministry, judgment was pronounced over his life. It was said that he will die through a motor vehicle accident and even the specific place was given. This was shown to Owuor in a vision. …. He is alive and healthy.
#7. Owuor believes he is the last prophet to come on earth. He believes that he is the ultimate authority in a person’s life. The people who work with him FEAR him to death. They are afraid of judgment over their lives.
#8. Mr. Okwara also noticed that Owour totally disregarded, and in fact insulted other churches… Always referring to them as BAAL CHURCHES.
#9. The name REPENT KENYA was Okwara’s idea. He says he did the first letterhead in his office in Eldoret. He suggested the name and the Owuor was in agreement. The name has since changed to Repentance and Holiness ministry, though Owuor still uses the name severally, including one of his Youtube Channels.
#10. Mr. Okwara thanks a few believers; Pastor Mungai and Sister Pauline from Nairobi and many others who kept praying for him tirelessly.
#2. Fred Otieno
Personal assistants see everything — from their master’s daily schedule to their most personal moments.
It can feel like a roller coaster, with a boss of Owuor’s type who acts like a demon from hell one minute and gifts you with ‘eternal blessings from heaven’ the next minute.
Just like his master, Pastor Fred left his family. They were going to be an impediment to his dedicated service.
Somehow, they did not believe everything Owuor was saying. That even made it easier for Fred to say goodbye.
Fred served Owuor for years until the flames from within and without decided he needed to take a rest.
Citing frustrations from his master, the man decided to set himself ablaze just before the 2015 crusade in Kisumu.
And where did this take place? Right inside Dr. Owuor’s house. The tools were here and waiting. A 13kg gas cylinder and his suits.
Pastor Fred was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in critical condition after he was rescued by neighbors.
And he was ready for it. Death. He had already penned down a suicide note and sent SMS messages to his friends explaining the frustrations he had been facing as he diligently served ‘Prophet’ Owuor.
Even after recovery, Fred was not allowed to come any close to Owuor’s dreadful presence. For obvious and reasons. A compromise was hatched, and he was deported to Nakuru.
The man who left everything and everyone to serve Owuor now lives at the mercies of Litunda, assisted by Owuor’s failing memory. Whenever Owuor ‘remembers’ him, goodies visit his small room.
#3. Joseph Gitonga
Comes Joseph Gitonga. Maybe ready to do it differently. For his master or for himself?
Gitonga was Owuor’s right-hand man for quite some time, running all sorts of errands including shopping for his Runda mansion in China.
A personal assistant who wins the trust of his holy master is richly rewarded, more so in the life to come.
Gitonga seems to have secured some insurance against any eventualities.
To pre-empt his departure, Owuor accuses him of stealing from the lord.
Aha! Gitonga had saved enough to survive comfortably should Owuor spew him.
Back at his Church in Kasarani, Gitonga started misbehaving. The all-seeing eye of his master decided to look West as Gitonga ‘brothelised’ the Kasarani ‘Altar’.
Money had already gotten to his head, and he waxed allogant. Church members under him kept protesting, sending text messages to Kyaka and Litunda.
So loud were their protestations that some left his Kasarani ‘altar’.
Their tears reached Owuor who called for an emergency meeting on July 19, 2019, with Nairobi leaders/bishops.
Owuor being in a dilemma can’t kick Gitonga out.
A compromise was reached; gradually ease Gitonga out of his leadership at Kasarani by sending him an ‘assistant’.
August 25, 2019. At least three women confess to having been sexually involved with Gitonga for a few years.
Part of the confessions includes the bizarre full body massage Gitonga served them with, using olive oil, and with special focus on their genitalia.
August 26, 2019- Owuor excommunicates Gitonga.
August 28, 2019- Owuor orders the demolition of Gitonga’s Kasarani ‘altar’ from 1 am in the night. Demolitions proceed till daybreak.
This catches the attention of the media.
Owuor becomes more furious and vows never to forgive Gitonga, never to have Gitonga restored.
And that’s how Gitonga found his way back to the ‘waaru’ farms in Nyahururu.
Probably yes. But be careful.
Unlike Kevin Okwara who decided to spill the beans and head North, his two successors have had quite some bruised exits.
It seems the only safe way to leave Owuor’s service is by religiously pulling back the curtain.
